William Cowley and Heritage Crafts Celebrate Wim Visscher MBE
I am very happy to report that Wim has been awarded an MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours.
This award is in recognition of his commitment to the ancient craft of parchment and Vellum making, a skill now considered “critically endangered’ by the Radcliffe Red List. Having succeeded his father (who had succeeded HIS father, who had succeeded HIS father, who had succeeded HIS father), Wim has steadfastly kept the skills of parchment making finely honed, teaching numerous apprentices along the way. Wims daughter Julia is intending to continue her fathers good work and keep this most ancient craft very much in the here and now.
The award should also be seen as recognition of the excellent work by the Heritage Crafts Association. Their tireless efforts to ensure that our most historic skills do not merely fade into history are nothing short of Herculean. I salute you all and pass on Wims humble thanks that you consider him worthy of such an honour.
Warmest regards to all,
