William Cowley is pleased to offer a Vellum Covering Service to Interior Designers and bespoke Furniture Makers

The use of natural or dyed Vellum for covering a wide range of furniture is at the forefront of modern cutting-edge design. Vellum works well with a whole variety of desks, tables, bedroom suites, cupboards and drawer units etc. It will mould to convex shapes without cutting. Similarly Vellum wall or door panels provide a wholly unique fashion alternative to paint and wallpaper!

Our Vellum is made from Calfskin or Goatskin, with the latter more commonly used for furniture covering. With no two pieces of Vellum exactly alike the physical characteristics, shades and tones of this astonishing natural product can provide a stunning exclusivity to all kinds of bespoke furniture and panels. Although normally used in an uncoloured state, ranging from light cream to a variable brown/cream mixture of natural markings, we can also dye vellums in a variety of colours and effects for individual projects.

Our unique and highly distinctive Vellum offers great strength both in tension and resistance to tearing. The surface is extremely hardwearing, non-fading, and well able to resist repeated handling. For tables or flat surfaces it can be polished or lacquered.

William Cowley Vellum has a high degree of fire resistance and our Goatskin Vellum complies with BS EN60598-1 for use as a unique material for lampshade manufacture. Vellum lampshades will compliment Interior Design schemes wonderfully with a remarkable luminescent quality. Similarly room-dividing screens, backed by a light source, can work incredibly well achieving startling effects.

More information

If you have not used Parchment or Vellum before and intend to do so, or to use a different type, it is advisable to visit our premises and see a variety of whole skins.  This is especially advisable for the darker skins – natural calf, natural goat & cloudy calf. You will be able to get a feel for the variety of shades & markings not seen in a small sample or even on one whole skin. Small quantities are available from stock; otherwise the Vellum is handmade to order.

Please telephone Paul for detailed advice, which is available, free of charge, throughout the design and construction process. NB: It is especially valuable to contact us before panel sizes are planned, as designing to fit the natural skin will help minimise waste.  We can also advise on backing/fixing/surface finishes for sections being covered.
